Apple is undergoing a significant restructuring of its artificial intelligence (AI) division, signaling a move back towards a functional organizational model that was in place before 2018. 

According to reports, the company has begun relocating its robotics team to the hardware engineering division, a move that follows the recent placement of Siri under the software engineering wing. 

This strategic pivot suggests a diminishing confidence within Apple regarding the performance and progress of its centralized AI division.

The restructuring efforts reportedly commenced as early as 2021 with the reassignment of Apple's self-driving car project. 

This momentum continued in March 2025 when the development of Siri was moved under the leadership of Mike Rockwell, who also heads the visionOS team. 

Sources indicate that Apple executives believe the six-year-old AI division has fallen behind competitors, particularly in the rapidly advancing field of generative AI. 

The reported delays in the rollout of crucial Apple Intelligence features, notably the next-generation upgrades for Siri, have allegedly led to increasing internal dissatisfaction.

A key aspect of this reorganization involves Apple's robotics group, which was previously part of the AI division. 

This team will now report to the hardware engineering division, led by John Ternus. This move underscores Apple's strategic intent to treat robotics as a hardware-driven innovation rather than solely an AI-led initiative. 

Earlier reports had suggested that Apple is actively developing non-humanoid robots, with potential production targeted for 2028.

Furthermore, the internal restructuring hints at a potential shift in leadership within Apple's AI strategy. 

There are suggestions that John Giannandrea, Apple’s Senior VP of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, who joined the company from Google in 2018, may eventually depart. 

It is reported that Apple does not plan to replace this role, indicating a full reversion to its historically functional organizational structure, separating operations into hardware engineering, software engineering, and services.

This anticipated return to a functional organization model is seen as a strategic move to enhance operational agility and foster product innovation within Apple.
