This rule clarifies that the ball is no longer in play at that point, negating any subsequent actions, including touching the ball.

This incident, while ultimately ruled not out, sparked a considerable debate among cricket enthusiasts and analysts regarding the interpretation of the "handling the ball" rule and when a ball is officially deemed "dead." 

The contemporary rules on such dismissals fall under Law 37.3.1, which pertains to "Obstructing the Field." 

This law states that a striker can be out for obstructing the field if willful obstruction or distraction by either batter prevents the striker from being caught out, provided the delivery is not a no-ball. 

However, Law 20.1.1.4 is also critical, explicitly stating that the ball becomes dead if it gets trapped between the bat and the batter’s body, clothing, or equipment.

The key distinction lies in the concept of a "dead ball." Once the ball is considered dead by Law 20.1.1.4, any action taken by the batter, such as removing the ball from their pad, is permissible as the play has effectively stopped. 

This differentiates the incident from past instances where similar actions might have led to a dismissal, most notably former England captain Michael Vaughan's dismissal for "handling the ball" in a Test against India before the rules were updated in 2017. 

The current laws prioritize preventing deliberate interference with a live ball while ensuring that players are not penalized for actions taken when the ball is no longer in play.

David Bedingham's continuation in the match holds significant importance for South Africa, given his impressive red-ball statistics in English conditions. 

With 4463 runs in 58 matches at an average of 57.21, including 16 centuries, and his outstanding performance in the 2024 County Championship where he was the second-highest run-scorer with 1331 runs at an average of 78.29, Bedingham poses a substantial threat to the Australian side.
