The short clip, which circulated widely on Chinese social media last week, depicts the woman using wet wipes to clean her face while an airport official audibly scolds her.

 The incident, which occurred in September of last year but only gained traction recently, highlights the challenges that extensive cosmetic application can pose for identity verification systems.

The unnamed airport official can be heard instructing the woman to "Wipe everything off until you look like your passport photo. Why would you do your makeup like that? You are asking for trouble." 

The strict directive underscores the airport's policy on identity confirmation, emphasizing the need for a clear resemblance between a passenger's current appearance and their identification document photo. 

It remains unclear whether the woman eventually succeeded in passing the facial recognition scan after removing her makeup.

The viral video sparked a flurry of reactions on Chinese social media, ranging from humorous observations to expressions of sympathy. 

Some commenters light-heartedly questioned if the woman expected to "walk around with a filter on in real life," while others felt pity for her apparent embarrassment and criticized the airport official for nagging her. 

The incident also ignited a debate about the capabilities of modern facial recognition technology.

Several online users questioned the efficacy of the airport's equipment, with one person remarking, "No matter how thick the makeup is, the face shouldn’t be unrecognizable, right? 

Isn’t it time to upgrade the equipment?" This sentiment reflects a growing concern about the limitations of current facial recognition systems in dealing with altered appearances, whether due to makeup, cosmetic surgery, or other factors.

This incident is not an isolated one, echoing previous reports of Chinese women encountering difficulties re-entering the country after undergoing facial plastic surgery in South Korea. 

In those cases, the dramatic changes to their appearance rendered them unrecognizable to border control, leading to significant delays and complications.

 Such occurrences highlight the ongoing challenges and potential for inconvenience that facial recognition technology presents when an individual's appearance deviates significantly from their registered identity.
