Google has temporarily paused the wider rollout of its AI-powered 'Ask Photos' feature within Google Photos. 

The feature, which began its phased release last fall, allows users to interact with their photo and video libraries through natural language queries, such as "Show me the best photo from each national park I’ve visited." 

This pause comes after a Google executive acknowledged that the feature was not meeting internal standards for performance and user experience.

Jamie Aspinall, a product manager for Google Photos, confirmed on X that the 'Ask Photos' feature "isn’t where it needs to be, in terms of latency, quality and ux." 

He clarified that the rollout had been halted at a very small scale to address these identified issues.

 This decision reflects Google's commitment to delivering a high-quality user experience, even if it means delaying the full release of a highly anticipated AI tool.

Aspinall reassured users that a significantly improved version of 'Ask Photos' is expected to be released within approximately two weeks. 

This updated iteration aims to restore the original speed of the feature and enhance its search accuracy. 

The 'Ask Photos' functionality is powered by Google’s "most capable" Gemini AI models, indicating the advanced technological backbone supporting this innovative offering.

This is not an isolated incident for Google when it comes to AI feature rollouts. 

The company previously paused its AI Overview feature in Google Search last May due to the generation of inaccurate and misleading responses, which garnered significant attention on social media. Similarly, Google's Gemini AI image-generation tool was temporarily halted in February after users discovered historical inaccuracies in its outputs. 

These instances highlight the challenges and complexities of deploying advanced AI models to the public.

In the interim, Google has announced enhancements to the keyword search function within Google Photos. 

Users can now employ quotation marks to conduct exact match searches for elements like filenames, camera models, captions, or text embedded within photos. 

Searching without quotes will continue to incorporate visual matches, thereby improving the overall ease and precision of locating specific images within their extensive photo collections.
