Excelsoft Technologies and AQA, a prominent UK-based exam board, have established a joint AI taskforce to focus on the research and development of ethical and secure Artificial Intelligence applications for the e-marking of handwritten student responses. 

The collaboration aims to merge AQA's extensive knowledge in high-stakes assessment with Excelsoft's cutting-edge AI, data, and e-assessment capabilities. 

This initiative is founded on the principle that while AI will support the process, the marking of exams will definitively remain a human process for the foreseeable future, emphasizing that assessment must continue to be driven by trust and fairness.

The core mission of the taskforce is to design and rigorously test responsible AI models and workflows that will assist human examiners, thereby enhancing the consistency and reliability of marking.

 A primary focus will be maintaining the highest standards of fairness, transparency, and data protection throughout the process. 

Sudhanva Dhananjaya, Chairman of Excelsoft, stressed that the collaboration centers on exploring how AI can responsibly support marking while keeping human judgment, ethics, and student privacy as paramount concerns in high-stakes assessment environments.

The joint research agenda encompasses several co-designed projects crucial for developing trustworthy AI practices. 

These include exploring human-in-the-loop AI models to support examiner decisions, developing bias-aware approaches to guarantee fairness across all student groups, and designing secure data pipelines for managing sensitive handwritten scripts and marking data. 

Furthermore, the taskforce will create transparent reporting and explainability frameworks to ensure that any AI involvement in the marking process is clearly understandable and can be properly governed.

Justin Coombs, AQA’s Chief Assessment Technology Officer, highlighted that the partnership views AI as a powerful tool to support, not replace, their expert examiners. 

By committing to rigorous research and testing with Excelsoft, AQA aims to shape how AI can be used safely and ethically in marking handwritten responses. 

The collaboration is structured to ensure that all stakeholders—including students, schools, and regulators—can have complete confidence in the process and the resulting outcomes, aligning with relevant regulatory and data protection standards.

The taskforce is comprised of a diverse team of data scientists, psychometricians, AI engineers, assessment designers, examiners, and ethicists from both organizations, operating under a shared governance structure. 

Their ultimate goal is to "build trustworthy AI practices for assessment," setting a new benchmark for AI use in marking that is accountable and explainable. 

Insights gleaned from this joint research will be instrumental in shaping future product roadmaps, marking services, policy discussions, and potentially contributing to industry-wide white papers on the ethical integration of AI in educational assessment.
