Google Chat Introduces Highly Requested Message Scheduling Feature

Google Chat is finally gaining a long-awaited and highly requested feature: message scheduling. 

This new capability allows users to draft a message and specify a later time or date for it to be sent, bringing Chat in line with other major messaging platforms like Google Messages, iMessage, and Telegram. 

Google implemented this feature to encourage more productive communication, specifically noting that it helps users avoid sending messages late at night or early in the morning, which is particularly beneficial when communicating with colleagues in different time zones.

To schedule a message, users draft their content as they normally would. 

A new down arrow icon next to the standard send button will allow them to select a custom time and date for delivery. 

This scheduling window is quite generous, allowing messages to be queued up to 120 days in the future. 

Once a message is scheduled, a distinctive banner will appear above the compose box in that conversation to clearly indicate a pending message.

To manage these delayed messages, Google Chat is introducing a new utility feature called the Draft shortcut. 

This shortcut will appear in the left-aligned sidebar of the Chat interface. Clicking the Draft shortcut opens a dedicated area where users can centralize, view, and manage all their scheduled messages. 

Within this area, users have the flexibility to edit, reschedule, or completely cancel a message before its scheduled send time. 

The Draft shortcut is context-aware and only appears when there are messages currently scheduled.

The rollout of the Message scheduling feature has already begun for some users and is expected to be widely available to the general user base around mid-January 2026. 

Critically, the feature will be accessible to all tiers of Google accounts: this includes all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal, free Google accounts, ensuring wide availability across professional and personal use cases.

In addition to the scheduling feature, Google is also providing a new, faster way to access the service via a dedicated web address: chat.google.com. 

Google states that this new URL loads quicker while retaining the same familiar user interface. 

While this new direct-access method is available, the older methods of accessing Chat, such as through the Gmail application, will continue to function.
